Vredenburg is the heart of the Saldanha Bay Municipality, being the largest town in the Saldanha Bay Municipality area on the West Coast serving the greater part of the West Coast. This is also where the office of the Mayor is. Approximately 138km north of Cape Town. This town hosts many large shops, a Provincial and Private Hospital, specialists, dentists, and it manages the town planning and administration for the surrounding towns such as St Helena Bay, Langebaan, Saldanha, Jacobsbaai, Hopefield, Malmsbury Rd, Laingville and Paternoster. Also, Reserve and Residential Nature and Farms-Old District.

Initially established as a Dutch Reformed Church congregation to serve the surrounding communities in 1875. Initially it had various names due to two farmers disputing freshwater fountains, but then renamed it finally to Vredenburg when the disputes were settled in an agreement.

A population in 2011 registered 28, 282, although there is another city in the Limpopo Province also called Vredenburg, this town is on the West Coast of South Africa.
